What is a Traineeship?

Traineeships are employment-based training aligned to a qualification. They are like an apprenticeship in a shorter time frame. Traineeships ensure that the employer gets the skill development they need and the trainee achieves a nationally recognised qualification while earning a wage.
Skills Strategies International is highly experienced in coordinating and delivering traineeships. A traineeship is an opportunity to combine work and learning. Trainees develop workplace skills whilst contributing to an organisation.
Traineeships are available to school leavers, people re-entering the workforce or people wishing to change careers. You can even begin a traineeship while you’re still at school (these are called School-Based Traineeships and more information about them is provided below).
Employers who take on a traineeship may be eligible for a range of funding incentives. Traineeships are funded by the federal and state governments and are signed up and monitored by an ASSN (Australian Apprenticeship Support Network).

Traineeships: Process, Pathways & Benefits

Process for Traineeships

  • Employment contract negotiated or employee recruited for a traineeship .
  • The Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) completes the signup process. Alternatively, Skills Strategies International can contact the AASN on the employer’s behalf.
  • The AASN checks eligibility, arranges the Training Contract signing, and submits the details to the Apprenticeship Office.
  • Skills Strategies International receives approval and contacts the trainee and workplace supervisor.
  • A Training Schedule and Training Plan are developed by the trainer, employer, and trainee, outlining:
    • Units of competency
    • Training timeline
    • Assessment schedule

The Training Plan is a legal requirement and must be lodged with the Apprenticeship Office. Most traineeships run for 12–18 months.

  • An invoice for the training fees is issued. Although the learner is responsible for the fees, employers commonly pay the invoice.
  • The learner receives an enrolment link and completes the online enrolment process.
  • Training and assessments are delivered according to the agreed Training Plan.
  • The workplace supervisor is regularly updated on the trainee’s progress.
  • Skills Strategies International reports training progress to the funding body each month.
  • After all units are completed, the employer confirms the trainee has demonstrated workplace competency.
  • The trainee is awarded their qualification and certification.
