According to the Bureau of Statistics (ABS), there were 2 309 436 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia in 2018, accounting for 99.8% of all businesses. The majority of Australian businesses are non-employing (62% of small businesses or 1 435 547).
Running your own business is one of the most rewarding employment activities you can do: no bosses to answer to and you get to be appreciated by your customers. There is nothing like providing a service or a product and the recipient tells you to your face how pleased they are with it and how it has enriched their life.
However, in today’s environment of COVID uncertainty and skills shortages, it may not be the best time to start your small business dream. But this won’t last forever. It is the perfect time to do your business research, analyse what competitors are doing and start developing your infrastructure. Things like your documentation, your marketing materials, your business plan.
You could even get started alongside your job. Then you can reduce your hours while your business builds. This is good risk management and helps you build your customer base and cash flow.
